Nent Force mine boat
Boats used to carry lead ore out of the Nent Force level mines in
Cumberland.
Newbury barge
Craft 109 feet long, with a 17 foot beam and a 3 foot 6 inch draught when
loaded with 110 tons. Based on the Kennet Navigation in Newbury. They were flat
bottomed with a rounded head.
Norfolk dinghy
A class of 14 feet dinghy; 86 were built for Norfolk and Suffolk Broads
racing; clinker built; gunter rig.

Norfolk keel
Preceded the Norfolk wherry and was the common cargo carrier on the
Broads. Square rigged, transom sterned and clinker built craft. Around 54ft x
14ft, carrying 30 tons but also came in a variety of sizes. Succeeded by the
wherry after 1800 which could be sailed with fewer crew.

Double ended vessels with the mast stepped well forward carrying around 25
tons on a 4ft draught. Painted black with a single gaff sail. Mostly clinker
built.'Wherry' means boat and it acquired its local meaning in Norfolk and
Suffolk.

Originally the motor barges used in the North East were converted from
keels but took on their own construction and design when iron and steel motors
were developed. Sizes varied from 51ft 6 inches on the Calder and Hebble
Navigation to 180ft long on the Aire and Calder Navigation.
