horse drawn narrow boat
Initially built in wood (oak and elm), later in iron or steel or a
combination of metal and wood they maintain the basic narrow boat shape, double
ended and flat bottomed but with a shorter bow and stern. Long distance boats
trading anywhere on the narrow canal system had a back cabin at the rear of the
cargo space, usually 10ft x 7ft max. From the 1870s some boats had small fore
cabins as a result of improvements brought about by Canal Reformers (George
Smith). On average, boats carried 25 - 30 tons on a draught of 3ft 6in. The
first of two boats pulled by a horse could be referred to as a 'first boat' and
the second as a 'last boat'.
