Terminology Initiatives at the National Army Museum, London

The National Army Museum (NAM) has developed a number of term lists for its own in-house use, grouped according to the disciplines which correspond to the five curatorial departments in the museum:

  • Archives, photographs, film and sound records;
  • Books;
  • Fine and decorative art;
  • Uniforms, badges and medals;
  • Weapons, equipment and vehicles.

They are made available free in printed form in order to encourage a standard approach to the documentation of military collections. Staff from the NAM are also involved in the work of the Terminology Sub-Group of the Museums Weapons Group.
