Project Proposal - Persistent Unique Identifiers for Objects
| Status | This proposal is under active discussion within Collections Trust and the wider cultural heritage community. |
| Summary description | As the cultural heritage sector moves towards the online publication of collection descriptions and object-level information for public use, there is a need for a consistent numbering system which provides unique identification of individual assets. Since the mid 1970's, Collections Trust predecessor MDA has maintained a system of MDA Codes, which enable cultural heritage professionals to allocate an unique and persistent identifier to individual objects. A system of persistent digital object identifiers (possibly based on the Digital Object Identifier standard) represents the next logical step in the evolution of this process. This will allow individual digital assets to be persistently associated with item-level metadata wherever they are used or published. |
