Documentation for Accreditation

Overview

This course provides an introduction to the basic principles of museum documentation with particular reference to MLA's Museum Accreditation Scheme. Consideration is given to the benefits of good documentation practice, and participants will examine the content of an effective system.

Topics covered include the Museum Accreditation Scheme, the application of SPECTRUM, the relevance of museum policy making, and assessment of participants own systems against the Accreditation requirements for documentation.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • Considered the importance of good documentation practice;
  • Examined and discussed the Museum Accreditation Scheme documentation requirements;
  • Understood the principals and use of SPECTRUM;
  • Examined a basic museum documentation system;
  • Assessed their own documentation system against the Museum Accreditation guidelines;
  • Outlined a plan to enable their museum to meet the documentation requirements of the Museum Accreditation Scheme.

Participants

The course is designed for both museum employees and museum volunteers who are:

  • Working towards Museum Accreditation;
  • Preparing their Accreditation application;
  • Addressing museum backlogs.

Training Methods

This course will deliver the objectives using a mix of presentations, practical exercises, a short training video, informal discussion and one to one consultancy.

Preparation

Participants should have considered the documentation systems already in use in their museum.
