What is Collections Management?
The UK's museums, archives and libraries hold some of the richest and most diverse collections in the world. These collections are used to deliver exciting, engaging, educational and meaningful services to millions of visitors and users every year.
The UK culture sector makes a vital contribution to society and to the economy, whether through cultural tourism, income generation, employment or simply by giving people a chance to engage with their history and community.
Providing the best possible service for users means taking a professional, cost-effective and accountable approach to the management of collections. Collections Management is a new, inter-disciplinary approach, which blends specific technical and professional expertise with more general skills in management, fundraising and service delivery.
Collections Trust is championing this approach to Collections Management because it is vital to the future sustainability of our sector. It enables us to build public trust, to make the most of our resources and to constantly improve the quality of our services to the public. This is why we are working in partnership to deliver a new BSI standard for the management of cultural collections.
