Collections are a wonderful means for transporting us to different times and different cultures, and for different ways of looking at the world. They are the distinctive feature of museums, but are central to other institutions such as archives and libraries. There is a huge public interest in history and now. In these times of accelerating change, it is more important than ever to understand how collections can be properly managed and imaginatively presented.
My role on the Board, along with the other Board Members, is to review and approve the Collections Trust's strategy, and to offer advice and guidance from my experience as a legal practitioner with over fifteen years of experience of advising museums and other cultural institutions. I also aim to be an ambassador for the Collections Trust. My day job is as a partner at the law firm Farrer & Co LLP, where I am Head of the Intellectual Property and Commercial Team. The Team's work is varied, but a significant component involves helping museums achieve their objectives and manage their legal risk in the context of trading, fund raising, publishing, IT procurement and IPR management. I am also Deputy Chair of the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information (APPSI). Outside of work I try to spend as much time as I can with my wife and three children, and find relaxation through gardening, cycling and watercolour painting. |
